DIY Autumn Photoshoot

Location is the backdrop to your images and for that reason it’s probably the most important factor for a seasonal shoot. You want to choose somewhere with lots of leaves that have already changed colour and blanketed the floor. I recently planned an autumnal session way ahead in advance and the forest that I’d chosen was still vibrant green so I had to change location to the stunning Idless Woods. Be prepared and do a recce to make sure you’ve got those gorgeous colours in the background as it’ll really set off your images.

Styling determines how ‘autumnal’ your photos turn out. Warm, neutral tones with textured fabrics like wool give your images that seasonal feel. Matching hats, scarves and mittens look super cute on your little ones! If you have time, you could take additional clothing and accessories to have an outfit change and props like a picnic blanket and hot chocolate in mugs to make it extra special. Comfort is key especially on particularly chilly days, so make sure you take plenty of layers.

Let go. Let your children have the freedom to run around, play with fallen leaves and explore as they please. Avoid excessive posing and focus on allowing the day to unfold and flow naturally. You’re absolutely guaranteed to get the best pictures this way, with authentic laughter and real memories of a great day out.

Post-production. Embrace the creative within you and edit your images using software like Adobe Lightroom or the app VSCO to get the most out of your photos. Simple adjustments can make a good photo great. Under the trees on the forest floor it can get a little bit dark. As a general guideline, I’d recommend increasing the brightness and saturation, and decreasing the highlights. If you have the option, reduce the ‘green’ to give a more contemporary aesthetic. Ultimately these decisions are yours to make and you can edit your images to whatever style you like the most!
